I.Overview of the Department

1.Institutional Structure

College English Department is primarily responsible for teaching the College English course and its extension courses for all non-English major undergraduates. It comprises the First, Second, Third, and Fourth College English Teaching and Research Sections, an Innovative Class Teaching Team, and a Language Activity Center.

2.Staff

The department currently has 68 full-time teachers, including 6 professors (9%), 7 associate professors (10%), 22 lecturers (32%), 10 Ph.D. holders (15%), 8 dual-qualification teachers (12%), 11 foreign teachers (16%), and 16 teachers (24%) with overseas study or visiting experience. The department also appoints three renowned university  professors as guest professors to provide guidance on research.




3.Highlights

College English has constructed three major teaching modules: the General English Module,the Intercultural Communication Module, and the English for Specific Purposes Module. The curriculum integrates value education throughout the entire teaching process, aiming to cultivate internationally-minded talents who possess both a global perspective and a deep love for their country, thus fulfilling the fundamental mission of moral education.

Faculty members place great emphasis on teaching reform, actively utilizing blended online and offline teaching methods such as the Chaoxing platform and digital language labs, and engaging in various teaching and research activities accordingly. The department has secured 21 provincial-level research projects, 1 sub-provincial project, 3 municipal- and bureau-level projects, 73 university-level teaching reform and research projects, 3 quality courses, 3 key courses, and 5 web-assisted courses. Our teachers actively participate in various national and provincial teaching competitions and evaluation activities. They have achieved remarkable success in high-level events such as the National Foreign Language Teaching Presentation Competition, the "SFLEP Cup" National College Foreign Language Teaching Contest, the "Unipus Teaching Star" Contest, provincial model cases of value education, teaching research paper competitions, and teaching quality management reform case evaluations. These outstanding overall results demonstrate solid teaching skills and research capabilities, fostering a positive environment where competition promotes teaching and research.

In terms of student extracurricular activities, the department has established College English Learning Communities and organized a series of diverse second-classroom activities to create a rich English learning atmosphere. There are ten teams under the College English Learning Community: Public Speaking, Debate, Intercultural Communication, Reading, Writing, Translation, Short Video, Live Streaming, Micro-Course, and Drama. Each team, aligned with its own development direction and educational goals, organizes targeted practical training for students. Concurrently, a range of activities isoffered, including one-on-one writing and speaking tutoring, the English Time and Space Room, all-English lectures on "Understanding Contemporary China," English performance showcases, reading sharing sessions, and workshops on writing and translation themed "Understanding Contemporary China."




Regarding student competitions, the department actively organizes students toparticipate in various English contests at all levels. These include the "Nanguo Cup: Understanding Contemporary China" College English Speaking Contest, the "Nanguo Cup: English Classics" Recitation Contest, the "Nanguo Cup" InterculturalCompetence Competition, the "Nanguo Cup" Short Video Series Competition, the "FLTRP · ETIC Cup" "Understanding Contemporary China" English Proficiency Contest for University Students, and the "Yanxing Cup" University English Application Ability Competition, among other high-level events. These activities provide platforms for students to showcase their talents and hone their skills, stimulating their enthusiasm for learning and innovative energy, effectively enhancing their comprehensive English application ability and intercultural communication competence, and strengthening their independent learning and teamwork skills.

In recent years, the department has actively served local and industry development,securing a total of 140,000 RMB in external research project funding,achieving notable results in industry-university-research collaboration. Building on this, we actively promote the integration of industry and education, as well as school-enterprise collaborative education. Leveraging deep cooperation with high-quality partners such as Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press, and Guangzhou Chuanling Education Technology Co., Ltd., we focus on collaborative innovation and practical exploration in the field of intelligent language services. Consequently, the department has successfully applied for provincial-level industry-education integration projects and leads the construction of the Intelligent Language Services Industry College, closely integrating industry resources and corporate practices with foreign language talent cultivation. This school-enterprise collaborative, integrated industry-university-research-application education model further enhances the adaptability and competitiveness of talent cultivation, building a significant platform for cultivating high-quality, versatile international language talents.

3. Language Service Courses Group

(1) International Communication

The Language Service Courses Group of International Communication includes: An English Course on Chinese Culture, Overview of the Cultures of English-Speaking Countries, Intercultural Communication, Spoken English for International Communication (instructed by a foreignteacher), and Practice of International Communication (English).

(2) Digital Business

The Language Service Courses Group of Digital Business includes: Business English, Intercultural Communication, An English Course on Chinese Culture, Spoken English for Digital Business (instructed by a foreign teacher), and Cross-border E-commerce Practice (English).

(3) Intelligent Application

The Language Service Courses Group of Intelligent Application includes: An English Courseon Chinese Culture, Intercultural Communication, Cultural Translation, Spoken English for Intelligent Applications (instructed by a foreign teacher), and English for Artificial Intelligence.
