An Account of the Bamboo Garden of Rectitude
Translated by Sibin Lu
The Garden of Rectitude was completed in the midspring of the year of Gui Si (2013).  With the breeze combing the willow twigs and rippling the clear water, surrounded by Irises and Orchids in bloom, bamboos here, symbolizing rectitude, vigorously grow upright.  From the charming landscape springs to mind a couplet:   “A pond of water, blue and clean, purifies our souls; A garden of bamboos, upright and green, foster a sense of rectitude.”  Thus are so named the “Pond of Purity” and the “Garden of Rectitude”. By the side of the water stand three adjacent pavilions named “Tri- Approach Pavilion”, as alluded to Confucius’s remarks in Doctrine of the Mean: “He who studies eagerly approaches intelligence; He who works diligently approaches benevolence; He who feels mortified by his own flaws approaches courage.”  Well, these three “approaches” are virtually the embodiment of the goal of the SCBC in her development of professionals.

An Account of the South Garden
Translated by Sibin Lu

This fairy South Garden, constructed in the year of Renchen (2012), lies in the southwest corner of the SCBC campus.  The garden echoes the grace of the green hill to the south and the bucolic of the vegetable farm to the east.  Garmented in the morning glow and sunset splendor, flowers and bushes contend to grow with their great vigor, while enjoying the gurgling of the water falls accompanied by the dew-covered lotus buds in the pond and the chirping of returning birds in the eve.  The grandeur of natural beauty is fully mirrored on the small pond, after which the pavilion is named.  Dull would he be of soul who could leave a sight so touching and enlightening.  Let's share our aspiration of training professional talents for the nation's prosperity, though we all meet by chance from other parts of the country.

An Account of the Twin Lakes
Translated by Sibin Lu

The twin lakes in the center of the SCBC campus are respectively called Mengri Lake, the “Lake of Sun Dreaming” and Duyue Lake, the “Lake of Moon Reading”. Meng Ri Lake in the south is so vast as for boat-rowing. It is so named as referred to the lines in Li Po’s poem, “Even at leasure angling on a shaded brook for fun, I seem to sail and dream of accompanying the sun”, which explicitly indicates a fortitude and the wish for faculty and staff to maintain a high aspiration in life’s ups or downs. While Duyue Lakein the north, clear and calm, is a water always rippled by playful fishes. A famous couplet goes: “Fish can read the moon when water is pure and clear; In a tranquil woods birds chatting we can hear”, connotating that the peaceful minds can be appreciated even by such creatures as fish and birds. Thus the name “Moon Reading” expresses the hope for students to peacefully persist in diligence and in pursuit of knowledge.
